最近、自分へのご褒美として、あるところに行ってきました。ホテルのアフタヌーンティーです！実はマレーシアは、ハイティーやアフタヌーンティーが盛んなんですよ。今日は、マレーシアの魅惑的なハイティー文化を、皆さんにお伝えします。

マレーシアのハイティー文化には、イギリス植民地時代の影響があります。ハイティーはもともと、イギリス上流階級の社交イベントの一つでした。そのイベントが、イギリスの統治下にあったマレーシアの富裕層の間でも人気になって、今ではたくさんの人々に親しまれるようになりました。マレーシアのハイティーは、イギリス式の伝統的なスタイルに、マレーシアならではの要素が融合した独特な文化です。マレーシアには、主にマレー系、中華系、インド系の3つの民族が共存しています。そうした多民族国家ならではの食材や調理法を取り入れ、ユニークな味わいになっているのが特徴です。それから、五つ星の高級ホテルでも気軽に楽しめる価格帯なのもマレーシアのハイティーの魅力の一つです。

マレーシアのアフタヌーンティーでは、さまざまな食べ物を楽しむことができます。伝統的なスコーンやケーキはもちろん、ケーキの中には、マレーシアの伝統的なお菓子など、目にも鮮やかなスイーツが並んでいることもあります。また、セイボリーと呼ばれる軽食には、サンドイッチをはじめ、マレー料理や、中国の点心など、バラエティ豊かな食べ物があるのが特徴です。私が訪れたのは春節という中国の旧正月の時期だったので、その年の干支をモチーフにしたセイボリーが食べられました。…と、ここまで食べ物の話ばかりしてきましたが、アフタヌーンティーといえば外すことができないのは、紅茶ですね。マレーシアは昔イギリス領だったので、その名残から、紅茶の種類が豊富だと言われています。自分の好みに合わせて味を選べるのはうれしいですね。

マレーシアには、ハイティー・アフタヌーンティーを楽しめる場所がたくさんあります。今回私が訪れたのは、マジェスティックホテルクアラルンプールというところです。ここはマレーシア最古のホテルと言われていて、国家遺産にも指定されています。コロニアル様式の優雅な雰囲気の中で、伝統的なハイティーを楽しむことができました。

私が行ったホテル以外にも、マレーシアにはたくさんのハイティー・アフタヌーンティースポットがあります。 マレーシアに来たときにはぜひ色々と試して、自分のお気に入りの場所を見つけてみてくださいね。

Malaysia's high tea culture was influenced by the British colonial period. High tea was originally a social event for the British upper class. This custom became popular among the wealthy in Malaysia under British rule, and now many people enjoy it. Malaysian high tea is a unique blend of the traditional British style and elements which are distinctly Malaysian. Three ethnic groups coexist in Malaysia: Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Malaysia’s high tea is unique because they adapted ingredients and cooking methods typical of this multi-ethnic country. Another perk of Malaysian high tea is its affordability, even at a five-star luxury hotel.

You can enjoy a wide variety of foods at an afternoon tea in Malaysia. There are not only traditional scones and cakes, but also traditional Malaysian sweets, which are visually quite spectacular. You can also enjoy light snacks, called savories, which includes a wide variety of foods, such as sandwiches, Malay dishes, and Chinese dim sum. Since my visit was during the Chinese New Year, savories featuring the Chinese zodiac of the year were available. … I have been talking only about the food so far, but since this is about afternoon tea, tea is the one thing that cannot be omitted, right? Since Malaysia used to be a British colony various teas are available. It is nice to be able to choose the flavor that best suits your taste, isn’t it?

There are many places to enjoy high tea and afternoon tea in Malaysia. This time I visited a place called Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur. It is the oldest hotel in Malaysia and is designated as a national heritage site. I enjoyed a traditional high tea in an elegant colonial-style atmosphere.
