今日は、6月の歳時記です。日本は、6月に梅雨、つまり、雨の季節を迎えます。ところで、梅雨ってどう書くかわかりますか？正解は、梅に雨と書きます。「えっ、梅と雨って、全然関係なくない？」と思いませんでしたか？私も不思議に思ったので、調べてみました。
梅雨は「ばいう」とも読むんですが、もともとは他の漢字を使っていたようです。その漢字とは「黴」なのですが、これはいかにもジメジメした湿っぽい感じがするので、ちょうどその季節に旬を迎える梅に置き換えたんですね。
ちなみに「つゆ」と読むようになった理由は、植物が雨に濡れている様子を表す「つゆけし」という言葉から来ているそうですよ。
