118_Kawaii Culture_「かわいい」文化

赤ちゃん、子犬、ハローキティ…これらの共通点はなんでしょう？「かわいい」ことです。真面目に考えてくれた人、すみません！さて、この「かわいい」という言葉、英語でもアルファベットでそのまま使われるほど、世界に浸透していますね。最近では「かわいい学」として、この言葉や文化について研究する分野もあるようです。

今日は、この「かわいい」文化を私なりに考察してみます。まず、かわいいの定義ですが…たぶん「魅力的で、守りたくなるもの」だと思います。赤ちゃんや子犬などは、見た目の可愛らしさの他に「自分が守ってあげなくちゃ」という気持ちがしませんか？

さて、日本では、女性はキレイな人よりかわいい人のほうがモテると言われています。つまり、「男性が守りたくなるような、魅力的でかよわい女性」というのが、日本人男性における女性の理想像なんですね。これは、西洋とは対照的かもしれません。西洋では一般的に、自立したかっこいい女性が人気があると聞いたことがあります。

そのような通説があるからか、日本ではわざとかわいく振る舞う女性もいます。いわゆる「ぶりっ子」です。男性の前でだけかよわさをアピールしたり、高い声を出したりする女性のこと。「守りたい」という気持ちを起こさせて、自分を魅力的に見せようとするんです。女性からはあまり評判はよくないですが、このような女性を好む男性もいるんですね。

「かわいい」についての話をしていたら、いつの間にかぶりっ子の話になってしまいました…みなさんが「かわいい」と聞いてイメージするものはなんですか？

Babies, puppies, Hello Kitty...what do they all have in common? They are all cute. Sorry, for those who took me seriously! The word "kawaii" has become so well-known all over the world that it is even written in the English alphabet and used as a word in English. Recently, a new field of study, centering on this word and its culture, has emerged, called "kawaii studies.”

Today, I would like to discuss this "kawaii" culture in my own words. First of all, I would like to define "kawaii" as “something that is charming and makes you want to protect it”. Don't babies, puppies, etc., besides looking cute, give you the urge to protect them?

By the way, in Japan, it is said that a cute woman is more popular than a beautiful one. In other words, the ideal image of a woman for Japanese men is "a charming, pretty woman whom men want to protect.” This may be in contrast to the West. I have heard that in the West, independent and cool women are generally more popular.

Perhaps, because of this popular belief, some women in Japan deliberately act cute. They are called "burikko.” This refers to a woman who shows off her cuteness or has a high-pitched voice only in front of men. They try to make themselves look attractive by making men feel ‘these women need our protection’. Many women frown upon this, but some men like this kind of woman.

Although I was talking about "kawaii," I somehow ended up talking about burikko... Anyway, what do you imagine when you hear the word "kawaii"?
