119_Introduction of Sukagawa_須賀川紹介

南アフリカにいてしばらくお休みしていたアドレスホッピングを、再開しました。久しぶりの他拠点生活、1箇所目は福島県の須賀川市です。大きい町ではないので、聞いたことがない人がほとんどだと思います。私も全然知らなかったんですが、何日か滞在するうちにおもしろいところだと思うようになりました。今日は、須賀川についてみなさんに紹介しようと思います。

須賀川市は、福島県のほぼ中央にある町です。江戸時代、奥州街道では有名な宿場町として栄えました。俳諧も盛んだったので、松尾芭蕉は「奥の細道」の旅で須賀川宿に8日間も滞在しています。実際私が滞在していた地域でも、いたるところにその面影がありました。この規模の町にはめずらしく、たくさんの飲食店があったし、松尾芭蕉記念館や、芭蕉の俳句が書かれた街灯などがいくつもあったんです。

もう一つこの町で有名なのは、ウルトラマンです。彼は銀河系の外からやってきた巨大な宇宙人で、さまざまな怪獣から地球を守ってくれます。そのヒーローを生み出した円谷英二監督の故郷が、須賀川なんです。町では「ウルトラマンが生まれた町」として町おこしをしていて、通りの両脇にウルトラマンや怪獣の像があったり、グッズショップを展開したりしています。

知らない小さな町の見どころを見つけられるのも、アドレスホッピングの魅力の1つですね。

I have resumed address hopping after taking a break for some time, while being in South Africa. My first destination, after my hiatus, was Sukagawa City in Fukushima Prefecture. It is not a big town, so most people have never heard of it. I had never heard of it either, but after staying here for a few days, I found it an interesting place. Today, I would like to introduce Sukagawa to you all.

Sukagawa is a town located almost in the center of Fukushima Prefecture. In the Edo period (1603-1867), it flourished as a famous Shukuba-machi, in other words a post station town, on the Oshu highway. Haiku poetry was also popular here, so Matsuo Basho stayed in Sukagawa for eight days on his "Oku no Hosomichi" (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) journey. In fact, I found traces of Basho everywhere. There were many restaurants, which is unusual for a town of this size, a Matsuo Basho Memorial Museum, and several street lamps with Basho's haiku written on them.

Another famous characteristic of this town is Ultraman. Ultraman is a giant alien from outside the galaxy who protects the earth from various monsters. Sukagawa is the hometown of director Eiji Tsuburaya, the creator of this hero. The town is promoting itself as "the town where Ultraman was born," with statues of Ultraman and monsters on both sides of the street, as well as shops selling character merchandise.

One of the delights of address hopping is that you can discover the main attractions of a small town you didn’t know about before.
