日本には、一年の中の月を数える特別な言い方があります。10月をどう言うか、知っていますか？神無月です。由来は、漢字の通り、神様がいない月、です。どうしてこんなふうにいうかというと…日本ではもともと、神様は世の中にたくさんいると考えられてきたんです。その神様たちが、毎年10月になると会議のために出雲大社という神社に集まります。だから、日本中から神様がいなくなる月ということで、神無し月、神無月というんです。ちなみに、出雲大社がある島根県では、10月を神在月、と呼んでいたそうですよ。
さて、今日はみなさんに1冊の本を紹介します。「すべての神様の十月」という本です。古くから日本に伝えられてきた、さまざまな神様たちの日常を描いた本です。いくつかの短い物語で構成されていて、ユニークな神様たちが人間と交流する様子が書かれています。

In Japan, we have a special way of naming the months of the year. Do you know what October is called? It is Kannazuki. As the kanji implies, it means the month without any gods. So why is October called Kannazuki? From the beginning Japanese have believed that there are many gods in the world. Every year in October these gods would gather at a shrine called Izumo Taisha for a conference. Therefore, it is called kaminashizuki, which means a month without gods, or kannazuki, since it is the month in which all the gods disappear from Japan except for Izumo Taisha. By the way, in Shimane Prefecture, where Izumo Taisha is, October is called kamiarizuki, which means a month with gods.
Now I would like to introduce to you a book today. It is called October, the month of all the Gods. It is a book with ancient stories that have been handed down through generations in Japan, depicting the daily lives of various gods. The book consists of several short stories and how these unique gods interact with people.
Incidentally, at the conference at Izumo Taisha, which I mentioned at the beginning of this episode, it seems that each god reports on what happened during the year. The reports are about people's destinies and their fate. While I was reading this book I got the feeling that the gods at that moment were reporting about the lives of people at their conference. It is interesting to think about the title of a book after reading it, isn’t it?
