コロナ禍になって変わったことのなかに、何がありますか？在宅勤務になった、旅行できなくなった、などなどたくさんあると思いますが、便利になったこともありますよね。プロジェクターがほしいと思ったら、注文した次の日には家の前に届いているし、遅く起きた朝、お腹が空いたらアプリでマクドナルドを注文して、何もしなくてもごはんが食べられます。また、Instagramを見ていてかわいい服を見つけたら、その場で注文し、もしサイズが合わなかったら返品もできてしまいます。価格もとても安い物が多くて、買い物好きな人にとっては我慢するのが難しい環境なんじゃないでしょうか。
本当に便利だし私もよく使いますが、この便利さ、本当にいいことだらけなんでしょうか？その裏で、何かが起きているのかも…そう思って、少し調べてみました。そうすると、厳しい実態が明らかになったんです。
例えば、とても安く買える服やバッグ。その服は、誰が作っているんでしょう？出稼ぎで中国に行っている労働者たちです。家族を養わなければいけないので、労働環境が悪くても、逃げ出すことができません。流行の服を早く作ってたくさん売るために、何時間も働かなければいけないのだそうです。
それから、オンライン通販。注文した次の日に届く仕組みは、急いでいるときにはとても便利ですよね。でも、配達員さんたちの環境は劣悪なんだそうです。毎日届けられないほどのダンボールを渡されて、朝から晩まで運転して届けているんだそう。このような環境を変えるために、日本では配達業者の組合ができました。
私達の便利さは、誰かの犠牲の上に成り立っているんですね。安すぎたり、便利すぎたりするものには必ず理由があるということを忘れてはいけません。
What are some of the things that have changed since the spread of the Coronavirus? I'm sure many things have changed , such as working from home, not being able to travel abroad anymore, etc., but there are also things that have become more convenient. If you want a projector, order it and the next day it will be delivered right to your doorstep; and if you get up late in the morning and are hungry, you can order McDonald's on an app and eat it without having to put in any effort. Also, if you find a cute outfit while browsing Instagram, you can order it on the spot and even return it easily if the size doesn't fit. The prices are also very low, so for those who like to shop, it's very difficult to resist the temptation.
All this is really convenient and I also use these services a lot, but is this convenience just all good? Maybe there is something lurking below the surface...so I did a quick research. That is when I discovered some harsh realities.
For example, let’s take clothes and bags that you can buy at very low prices. Do you know who made these clothes? They are workers who go to China as migrant workers. They have to support their families, so they cannot run away even if the working environment is very bad. They have to work long hours to make trendy clothes as quickly as possible and to sell as many as possible.
Another example is online shopping. This system, in which you receive your order the next day, is indeed very convenient when you are in a hurry. But the working environment for the delivery staff is miserable. They are given more boxes than they can deliver every day, and they drive from morning to night to deliver them. In order to change these working conditions, a union for delivery service providers was formed in Japan.
Our convenience comes at the sacrifice of someone else. We must not forget that there is always a reason for things that are too cheap or too convenient.
