104_My thoughts on a novel “An”_小説「あん」を読んで

いま私がいる南アフリカでは、計画停電がよく起こります。電気が使えないと、音楽を聞いたりテレビを使ったりすることができないので、電気を使わなくても楽しく時間を過ごそうと思うようになりました。実は、停電は本を読むのに最適な時間なんです。特に電子書籍は、暗いところでも読めて便利だと感じています。

さて、今日は最近Kindleで読んだ本の感想を、みなさんに共有しようと思います。「あん」という本です。「あん」は日本の和菓子、あんこのことです。物語の舞台は、雇われ店長の千太郎が営む、どら焼き屋「どら春」。そこにアルバイトの求人を見てやってきたのは、70歳は超えた手の不自由な女性、吉井徳江でした。徳江さんの作るあんの美味しさに驚いた千太郎は彼女を雇うことにして、二人でお店をやっていくのですが…続きを知りたい人は、Webサイトのリンクから買うことができるので、ぜひ読んでみてください。

この本は、2013年に日本で発行されてから、なんと14カ国語に翻訳されているそう。フランスでは「読者が選んだ文庫大賞」という賞も獲っていて、海外の読者からも支持されているようです。特に人気になったのは2年ほど前、コロナウイルスによるパンデミックが始まってから。きっと、コロナ禍の状況をこの小説に重ねて考えている人が多いんですね。作者は、差別や偏見にあったとき、どうやって自分の心を安定させるかをこの小説で描いたんだそう。少し悲しいけれど読む意義のある小説だと思います。

In South Africa, where I’m staying at the moment, load-shedding often happens. Now, today I’d like to share with you my thoughts on a book that I have recently read on Kindle. It is a book titled “An.” “An” is a traditional Japanese sweet made from red bean paste, called anko in Japanese. The story takes place in a dorayaki shop, "Doraharu", and is supervised by a hired manager, Sentaro. A woman over 70 years old with a disabled hand, Tokue Yoshii, comes to the shop after seeing a job opening for a part-time position. Sentaro, surprised by the tastiness of the red bean paste which was made by Tokue Yoshii, decides to hire her, and they start running the store together... Since the book’s publication in 2013 in Japan, it has been translated into 14 languages. It also won the Readers’ Choice Award in France, and seems to be well supported by readers overseas. About two years ago, with the start of the coronavirus pandemic, it became even more popular. I guess many people see parallels between the pandemic and the novel. According to the author, the novel tries to depict how to find emotional equilibrium when you are facing discrimination and prejudice. The story is a bit sad, but I think it’s worth reading.
